Open spaces in the new Owe layouts back onto hills that still carry native trees and grass. A thick band of native planting where a layout meets the hill makes a softer boundary between the towers and the slope, holds the soil in the monsoon, and draws birds down from the hill. We collect species from what grows naturally on these hills, prepare the soil, often thin and stony here: plant when the rains begin, and keep watering until two summers have passed.
Owe is an older village at Kharghar's outer edge, where the node's sectors meet the hills. Its houses and lanes remain, but the fields and open land around it are being taken up by new sectors and residential towers. Above the village, a small dam holds a lake in a fold between the hills, and in the monsoon streams run down past the settlement towards the node. The ground here is steeper and more broken than in central Kharghar. It is still one of the node's quieter corners, but building has been moving steadily towards it.
How it works
Miyawaki Urban Dense Forestation, from survey to survival.
- 01/05
Native species selection
A multi-layer palette of native species chosen to the soil, climate and the forest's intended structure.
- 02/05
Soil analysis & enhancement
Soil tested and amended with the biomass and nutrients dense planting needs to establish fast.
- 03/05
Dense plantation
Close, multi-layer planting on a marked grid, the density that makes a Miyawaki forest grow upward.
- 04/05
Maintenance & survival monitoring
Two to three years of watering, weeding and, crucially, measured survival, the number the whole method is judged on.
- 05/05
Carbon estimation
Where required, an estimate of the carbon sequestered, so the outcome is a figure, not a claim.

Miyawaki Urban Dense Forestation in Owe: common questions.
01Our plot at Owe has thin, rocky soil. Can a Miyawaki forest take hold there?
Yes, with preparation. The bed is excavated and backfilled with soil enriched with compost, and species are chosen from those that grow on the surrounding hills. Growth may start slower than on deep soil, but hill species cope well once established. We test the ground and plan the bed depth.
02How long does miyawaki urban dense forestation take in Owe?
On timing: plantation seasonal; monitoring 2–3 years. A realistic Owe schedule is set once the site and the scope have been read, and the work is carried through to the outcome by the same named people.
