In Kalamboli a green belt has a plain job: to put a living screen between trucks and the flats next door. The open ground left in warehouse and yard plots is usually compacted hardcore, and trees planted straight into it fail. We break it up, bring in soil, and plant dense rows of broad-leaved, dust-tolerant native species on the boundaries nearest to housing, with a drip line fed by treated or harvested water. Each tree is numbered, so survival can be shown at the next inspection.
Kalamboli sits where the Sion–Panvel highway, the start of the Mumbai–Pune Expressway and the roads to the port all meet, and freight is what most of it serves. CIDCO laid out a large iron and steel market here, which drew steel trading out of Mumbai, along with a truck terminal, warehouses and yards for cutting, storing and moving metal. Residential sectors sit beside this belt, with housing societies, schools and markets of their own. Trucks queue on its roads at all hours, and the junction has been rebuilt with flyovers as traffic to the airport side has grown.
How it works
Green Belt Development for Industries, from survey to survival.
- 01/04
Condition & buffer planning
The EC and consent green-cover conditions read, and a buffer plan sized and structured to meet them on the available plot.
- 02/04
Species selection
Pollution- and dust-tolerant native species chosen for attenuation, screening and survival at an industrial boundary.
- 03/04
Planting & establishment
Multi-row planting and the establishment care a buffer needs to close its canopy.
- 04/04
Compliance records
Documentation of the green cover developed and maintained, for the post-EC compliance file.

Green Belt Development for Industries in Kalamboli: common questions.
01Our warehouse plot is almost fully paved. Where would a green belt go?
Along the boundary walls, in the front setback and around the parking areas, where a strip of paving can be lifted and replaced with soil. Even a two-metre strip, dug deep, can carry a line of trees. We walk the plot, mark the usable strips and choose species hardy enough for the dust.
02How long does green belt development for industries take in Kalamboli?
On timing: planting seasonal; establishment 2–3 years. A realistic Kalamboli schedule is set once the site and the scope have been read, and the work is carried through to the outcome by the same named people.
