- Category A & B projects above EIA Notification 2006 thresholds
Virar's larger residential layouts, built across several acres of former farmland, often cross the built-up threshold for an environment clearance. SEIAA's committee will ask about water supply, sewage, solid waste and existing trees. We answer each plainly in the application, including where water will come from while the municipal supply is limited, and set out conditions the project can actually meet.
Virar lies near the far northern end of Mumbai's Western suburban railway, where many Mumbai commuters begin their journey each day. The town spreads on both sides of the tracks: Virar West reaches towards Bolinj and the coast at Arnala, while Virar East rises towards the hills, with the Jivdani temple on the ridge. Once a small station town among orchards and farms, it now holds mid-rise housing complexes, gated layouts and new commercial streets, and building continues on the fields and plantations at its edges. Some greenery survives in the older wadis and on the hill slopes.

Environment Clearance in Virar: common questions.
01Our Virar layout will rely on tankers until municipal water arrives. Does that affect the clearance?
It needs to be addressed openly. The committee will want to know the water demand, the source and how the project will reduce it through recycling and rainwater harvesting. We set out the phased supply plan in the application and design the STP reuse and harvesting so that the demand on tankers stays as low as possible.
02How long does environment clearance take in Virar?
On timing: typically 4–8 months. A realistic Virar schedule is set once the site and the scope have been read, and the work is carried through to the outcome by the same named people.
