Virar's new neighbourhoods have little shade, and open space in layouts is often small. Packed tightly with native saplings, a school ground, a society's amenity plot or a corporation site can close into a thicket in a handful of monsoons. We rebuild the soil, pick species that belong to this coast, plant closely, and tend the patch until its canopy shades out weeds unaided.
Virar lies near the far northern end of Mumbai's Western suburban railway, where many Mumbai commuters begin their journey each day. The town spreads on both sides of the tracks: Virar West reaches towards Bolinj and the coast at Arnala, while Virar East rises towards the hills, with the Jivdani temple on the ridge. Once a small station town among orchards and farms, it now holds mid-rise housing complexes, gated layouts and new commercial streets, and building continues on the fields and plantations at its edges. Some greenery survives in the older wadis and on the hill slopes.
