Landscapes in Ulwe's new societies face heat, salty wind, torrential rain and thin fill. Imported turf and ornamental shrubs struggle and are thirsty. We plan around local trees and shrubs, sunken beds that catch monsoon water where it falls, drip lines supplied by recycled STP water, and open-jointed paving that lets the ground drink, so the compound drains faster and holds its green into May. Upkeep falls as well, since native planting needs less mowing, spraying and replacing.
Ulwe is one of CIDCO's newest nodes, built on low land at Navi Mumbai's southern edge beside the new international airport. Paddy, salt pans and creek-side wetland once covered much of it, and preparing the airport site meant diverting the Ulwe river and cutting down a hill. Rows of residential towers now stand in its sectors, with many more under construction, and the sea link from Sewri comes ashore close by. Schools, shops and clinics are still arriving behind the residents. Flat, bare of old trees and half-built, it is filling up year by year.

01Water stands in our society garden for days after heavy rain. Can landscaping fix it?
Largely, yes. Swales, rain gardens and porous paving slow the water and let it sink in, and species that tolerate wet roots survive the soaking. We walk the site after a downpour, note where water stands, then regrade and replant around those spots.
02How long does sustainable landscaping take in Ulwe?
