Chikhloli lies on the Badlapur side of Ambernath, where the town meets wooded hills. A small reservoir here has long supplied part of Ambernath's water, and the hills around it hold forest, streams and grassland. Most of the ground between the hills and the railway has been sold for housing, and apartment blocks now occupy former fields and farmhouse plots. A new railway station between Ambernath and Badlapur is planned here, and the prospect is drawing more building. Chikhloli is turning, quite quickly, from the edge of a village into a suburb.

Chikhloli's questions are about building close to a water source and at the foot of hills. Runoff and silt from construction sites can reach the reservoir and the streams that feed it, and a reservoir loses capacity with every load of silt. Slopes cut for building raise stability and drainage concerns each monsoon. Farmland trees are lost as layouts go up. And new housing must treat its sewage and manage its waste itself until the town's networks arrive.

Straight answers

Chikhloli: common questions.

01Our plot is near the reservoir. Are there special restrictions?

There may be: through the development plan, zoning around the water body, or conditions attached to approvals. We check the plan and any notified restrictions first, then design the layout and its drainage so runoff and sewage are kept well clear of the reservoir, describing each measure plainly in the application.

02When should monsoon protection be in place on a building site?

Before the first heavy rains, which usually means by late May. Silt traps, temporary drains, covered stockpiles and planting on exposed ground should all be ready. We set out a checklist for the site and inspect it with your team before the season starts, then again after the first big storm.

03Can we cut trees before we apply for building permission?

No. Felling is a separate permission, and cutting in advance can bring penalties and complicate the approval of your plans. We survey the trees first and apply alongside the building proposal, so both move together and the layout can be adjusted if a significant tree is better kept.

04What happens to surplus treated water in the monsoon?

Irrigation demand drops, so surplus water needs a route: the municipal sewer where one exists, or discharge to a permitted outlet that meets the standards. We plan this at the design stage, so the plant does not overflow or get bypassed during the rains, which is when a nearby stream is least able to cope.

05Is desilting enough to restore a reservoir's capacity?

It helps, but silt returns if the catchment keeps shedding it. Lasting results need control at the source: planting on bare slopes, silt traps on the streams, and building sites held to runoff conditions. We combine desilting with those measures in one plan, so the capacity recovered is not lost again within a few monsoons.
