Miyawaki Plantations – MCGM
We can create a green patches of Urban Forest by closely planting Multilayer and Multispecies plantation using Miyawaki technique of forestation. This would allow citizens to get a forest feel in the City area.
- MCGM has undertaken Miyawaki plantation initiative for over 5 lakh trees across the city of Mumbai.
- KIPL is engaged in the Miyawaki plantation works for the Eastern Suburbs of Mumbai, where around two lakh twenty one thousand trees would be planted across approx. 74,000 Sq.m of land at 27 locations of Eastern Suburban Mumbai
Benefits of Miyawaki Plantations
- Biodiversity Conservation : Miyawaki plantation, also known as the Miyawaki method or the "Tiny Forest" technique, promotes the rapid growth of dense, native forests in a small area.
- Carbon Sequestration and Climate Change Mitigation : Miyawaki plantations are highly effective in capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The dense vegetation and fast growth rate of the plants enable them to absorb a significant amount of carbon dioxide during photosynthesis.
- Soil Restoration and Water Management : Miyawaki plantation has a positive impact on soil health and water management. The dense root systems of the native plant species help prevent soil erosion and improve soil structure. The roots also aid in water infiltration, reducing the risk of floods and enhancing groundwater recharge.
